"I can't see myself playing after this contract," the 39-year-old center said.
Mutombo's return gives the Rockets team a solid backup to NBA All-Star Yao Ming (Center). The 7ft. 2 Mutombo is an 8 time NBA All-Star and 4 time NBA defensive player of the year.
"In our opinion, Mutombo was the best backup in the NBA last year" Rockets Dennis Lindsey (VP of basketball operations) said. "Dikembe provided a number of wins when Ming found himself in foul trouble or when the team was struggling on the defensive end. We have a group of special guys and Mutombo, being the elder , is a leader in many of those aspects."
Dikembe was selected No. 4 overall by the Nuggets in the 1991 NBA draft. He also played with Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets and New York Nicks before he was acquired by Houston last NBA season in an offseason trade with the Chicago Bulls.
David Falk, Mutombo's agent, said his client's decision to stay with the Rockets was not about signing a large contract, but about being on a great team and in a city that supports him.
"I told (Falk) just get the deal done," Dikembe said.
Inking a backup center was the latest of many moves in a busy NBA offseason for the Houston Rockets. Also this week, the Rockets signed free agent Derek Anderson (Guard), and the team has also reached deals with veteran Jon Barry (Guard) and free agent Stromile Swift (Forward).
Lindsey said "The heavy lifting is over,"
