The Kings has signed big man Shareef Abdur Rahim (Forward) to a contract this week, 3 days after he nearly was traded away to the New Jersey Nets.

Terms of this deal were not disclosed.

Abdur Rahim who spent the last 1 1/2 seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, who was almost traded to the New Jersey Nets earlier this week. However, New Jersey rejected the deal, claiming "a question arose" concerning Rahim's physical examination.

Abdur Rahim now 29 yrs old averaged 16.8 pts and 7.3 rebounds while shooting better than 50% this last NBA season for the Trail Blazers.

"We're delighted to be able to add this high caliber player/quality person to our team such as Rahim," said Geoff PetrieKings (president of basketball operations). "He's going to add more length, more scoring & rebounding for our team. Shareef's addition will improve our team in a many areas in which we wanted to get better. The 3rd overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft, Shareef has averaged 19.8 pts and 8.1 rebounds in 672 games for the Vancouver Grizzlies, Portland and Atlanta. He was an NBA All Star in 2002 with the Hawks but has yet to play in the NBA postseason.

"I'm excited," Shareef Abdur Rahim said. "The Kings are a great team. This team is loves to win, competing at a very high level and competing for a NBA championship. I'm looking forward to coming in and being a part of this team and help them carry on that Kings tradition."

Abdur Rahim will be faced with the task of filling the void of last season's trade of Chris Webber (Forward) to the 76ers.

"We're extreamly happy that it worked out," Kings Rick Adelman (Coach) said. "This is the guy we have wanted all along. We think Shareef is going to really help are team. He's going to give us a threat around the hoop that we need at this point."
